Why Cusco in mayo

May opens the dry season with the clearest skies while the valleys are still green from the rains — the year's best combination for photographing Machu Picchu.

On May 2nd and 3rd, Cruz Velacuy (Festival of the Crosses) brings the hilltop crosses down to be honored in barrios like San Blas, with brass bands, punch and fireworks.

Late in the month the Lord of Qoyllur Rit'i pilgrimage sets off toward the Sinakara glacier, one of the largest Indigenous pilgrimages in the Andes.
