Why Cusco in febrero

Cusco's Carnival (February 15th in 2026) fills the Plaza de Armas with yunzas, water balloons and dance troupes; in the villages people dance around a gift-laden tree.

The classic Inca Trail closes all of February for maintenance and the rainy-season peak, so this is the month for the Salkantay alternative, which stays open.

It's the wettest, least crowded month — ideal if you want Machu Picchu nearly to yourself, accepting afternoon showers and clear mornings.
