Why Krakow in enero

On January 6 the Orszak Trzech Króli (Three Kings parade) winds down from Wawel to the Main Market Square with thousands in costume and three royal processions converging on the square.

The szopki — Kraków's UNESCO-listed skyscraper nativity scenes — stay on display at Krzysztofory Palace through March, so you'll see them without December's crush.

It's the deadest month of the year: bargain hotel rates and Wawel Castle almost to yourself, with the snowy Tatras a couple of hours away for skiing in Zakopane.

On November 1, All Saints' Day, the Rakowicki Cemetery fills with thousands of znicze (grave lights) at dusk — a tide of light that's one of the year's most moving sights.

On the first Thursday of December (the 3rd in 2026) the szopkarze carry their skyscraper nativity scenes to the Mickiewicz monument: the szopki contest, Kraków's unique UNESCO tradition.
