What to do in Ávila in mayo

The editorial plan

Why Ávila in mayo

May 2 is San Segundo, Ávila's patron and first bishop — a romería climbs to his hermitage by the Adaja river and the youngest councillor carries the historic Banner of the Volunteers.

It's the wettest month of the year, around 61 mm on average — the Castilian countryside turns green and the Sierra de Gredos still holds snow on its summits.

The May 1-2 long weekend brings the warm season's first wave of visitors, with evenings now long enough to walk the full floodlit ring of walls.
